WHAT IS INCISE

MULTIDISCIPLINARY CANYON INVESTIGATION

INCISE the International Network for submarine Canyon Investigation and Scientific Exchange, will be holding the 8th International Symposium in Rome, Italy, in June 2027, hosted by the National Research Council (CNR), with the collaboration of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Sapienza. The symposium will broadly follow a traditional format with in-person oral and poster presentations and includes an ad-hoc workshop on sediment core analysis from canyon environments. We expect enthusiastic participants from a wide range of backgrounds, including geology, ecology, oceanography, geophysics, geochemistry, marine robotics and environmental advocacy. READ MORE

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUBMARINE CANYONS

Submarine canyons are dynamic features with a pivotal role in regulating ocean ecosystems and promoting geo-hazard. These topographic incisions are massive engines of global geochemical cycling, acting as main conduits for organic matter, water masses, sediment and pollutants to the deep-sea. Besides being primary gateways for deep-sea transport, canyons are often sites of enhanced productivity, act as biodiversity hotspots and represent an important source of ecosystem functions and services. On the other hand, active canyon erosion and transport represents a serious threat for ocean and coastal infrastructures.
There are more than 10000 submarine canyons in the Global Ocean but less than 1% have been currently explored. Recent advances in marine robotics and ocean exploration are increasingly revealing complex interactive dynamics within canyons, supporting exceptionally rich ecosystems, along with providing evidence of human footprint, linked to the growing deep-sea resource extraction and pollution.

Workshop

Canyons and the sedimentary record of climate change and human impacts

The pre-conference workshop will be held on Monday, 21th June 2027 at the Department of Earth Sciences of Sapienza University, located just adjacent to the symposium venue at the CNR Headquarter.

The workshop will focus on sediment core analysis from canyon environments for the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental and ongoing anthropogenic changes
